BIKANER REGION, NORTHERN INDIA

THE COW GRAVEYARD

With so many holy cows milling about in India, we found it strange that we never saw any dead ones. In the Thar Desert near Bikaner, we found out why. Whenever a cow dies in a city or town, someone (generally from the lowest caste – The Untouchables) gets paid to load it up and dispose of the carcass. After harvesting the hide and anything else of value, they dump the corpses into these massive ‘cow graveyards,’ far away from civilisation.
